[ Summary ] |
Fatigue in dialysis patients (i.e. exhaustion), is a phenotype of frailty, associated with poor physical functioning and low dietary intake of energy, as well as protein. Physical activity for hemodialysis (HD) patients often consists of sedentary life styles. It may be especially low for dialysis patients on treatment days. Regular exercise regimens are reported to minimize fatigue in HD patients. In addition, enteral nutrition supplementation improves physical activity related quality of life (QOL) for malnourished HD patients. In community dwellings, elderly Japanese women, regularly exercise and receive nutritional supplementation, which can improve their frail physical status, including exhaustion. However, it remains to be clarified whether combined exercise and nutritional intervention may lessen self reported fatigue in the dialysis population, thus additional studies are required. |
