Fatigue is one of the most frequent symptoms of dialysis patients and is associated with impaired health-related quality of life. Fatigue in the setting of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a complex multifactorial etiology, such as psychosocial factors, sleep, anemia, nutrition, and inflammatory cytokines. In addition, social and situational factors including education, and marital and employment statuses are related to fatigue. The type of renal replacement therapy, ultrafiltration, osmotic disequilibrium, diffusion, and changes in blood pressure has been implicated in the pathogenesis of post-dialysis fatigue. A recent observational survey revealed fatigue to be an important predictor of cardiovascular events in hemodialysis patients. Some studies evaluated therapeutic strategies for CKD fatigue such as renal rehabilitation. However, fatigue is often unrecognized in daily practice and has not been sufficiently evaluated in CKD patients. |
