[ Summary ] |
Long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) has been known to lead to peritoneal deterioration which is characterized by a decrease in peritoneal function. This includes insufficient ultrafiltration and increased peritoneal permeability, resulting from changes in peritoneal morphology. It is important to individually and serially evaluate and estimate the degree of peritoneal deterioration to prevent encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. To date, peritoneal equilibration testing and humoral factors in the drained PD solution such as cancer antigen 125, hyaluronic acid, matrix metalloproteinase-2, interleukin-6, vascular endothelial cell growth factor, and cloting and fibrinolytic factors, have been reported to be useful as markers of peritoneal deterioration. We introduce and summarize recent clinical findings concerning peritoneal deterioration markers. |
