[ Summary ] |
Neutral peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions with fewer glucose degradation endproducts, are widely used in Japan. However, the reasons for PD withdrawal as well as the incidence of encapsulating peritoneal dialysis (EPS), have not been elucidated. To address these issues, a multi-center-prospective observation study-NEXT-PD has been ongoing since 2008. There were 1,340 PD patients registered from 55 PD centers. 328 patients withdrew as of the end of May 2011. Eighty-one patients ceseased PD due to death. The leading cause of death was cardiovascular incidents, followed by cachexia, apoplexy, and infectious disease. 250 patients were switched to hemodialysis due to overhydration, followed by those having disorders unrelated to PD therapy, and those with PD-related peritonitis. Eight patients developed EPS with an incidence of 0.6 % among the withdrawal cases, and one death. The study is projected to end at the end of March 2012. It will provide novel findings concerning the status of PD in Japan. |
