Standardized plans for dental treatment of long term hemodialysis patients, especially tooth extraction, consist of the following: (1) surgical treatments, which should be avoided during the hemodialysis induction phase due to uncontrolled systemic conditions, (2) exchanges of information between medical care givers, which should take place before extraction, (3) surgical procedures, which should not be carried out on the same day as dialysis, (4) intra-oral administration of prophylactic antibiotics or administration via shunt after hemodialysis, (5) suturing of the mucosa in the socket should always be done to avoid hemorrhaging.
The primary factor affecting the health of these patients is infection control. Complications such as hemorrhaging or hematomas are minimized by performing extractions the day following dialysis therapy. |
