| [ Summary ] |
It is controversial whether cytokines can be effectively removed with hemofiltration (HF) or hemodiafiltration (HDF). However, several recent reports have shown the efficacy of cytokine removal with HF / HDF. In Europe, high volume hemofiltration (HVHF) has been aggressively studied in septic patients. Recently, HF, using high cutoff hemofilters, has been reported to effectively reduce interleukin (IL)-6 blood levels. Another approach is adsorption into hemofilter membranes, such as PMMA or AN-69 hemofilters. If effective methods to remove cytokines with HF / HDF are established, these modalities would represent new therapeutic approachs for prevention or treatment of multiple organ failure. |
