| [ Summary ] |
Despite advances in molecular biology and renal replacement therapy, the mortality rate for patients with acute renal failure (ARF) remains high. In the pathophysiology of ARF, cytokines play important roles. In acute tubular necrosis, cytokines closely participate with the acceleration and inhibition of inflammatory cell infiltration, as well as the apoptosis of tubular cells. Furthermore, in ARF cases may be complicated with sepsis, proceeding to systemic inflammatry response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), with cytokines closely participating in a complicated manner. In these conditions, cytokines are designated as the targets. Research on cytokine therapy or anti-cytokine therapy is advancing. However, even with these advances, clinical investigations have not yet established clear cause / effect relations for this condition. |
