[ Summary ] The Japanese Society of Nephrology (JSN) is conducting four main programs to combat chronic kidney disease (CKD) ; epidemiological studies, establishment of a guidelines for CKD treatment, CKD campaigns for citizens and general physicians, as well as international collaboration on CKD treatment. An epidemiological study disclosed that the number of CKD patients is over 4 million in Japan. The JSN established an equation to calculate GFR in the Japanese population and published a CKD guidebook. In this guidebook, the JSN proposed how specialists and other care givers should share the management of CKD patients. The JSN organized the Japan Association for CKD Initiatives (J-CKDI) in collaboration with the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy and the Japanese Society for Pediatric Nephrology. It is also conducting a CKD campaign for citizens and general physicians through the J-CKDI. In May of this year, the JSN organized the Asian Forum of CKD Initiative 2007, which attracted more than 80 nephrologists from 15 Asian countries to discuss the present status of CKD in Asia.
