| [ Summary ] |
Since the official guidelines for initiation or termination of dialysis treatment have not been fully established in Japan, all medical care providers face difficulties in making decisions concerning treatment. They tend to decide on treatment options according to the opinions of the patient and the family. However, this type of decision may create some difficult situations for both medical staff members and patients' families. Medical staff involved in these cases may sometimes be accused of homicide. Currently, documentation of living wills or advanced directives is not legally accepted in Japan despite of the marked progress in medical service. Therefore, it is strongly suggested measures be taken quickly to develop better and more acceptable guidelines to make correct decisions in difficult situations. |
