[ Summary ] |
With the recent advances in endoscopic techniques, the location, cause of and activity related to upper gastrointestinal (GI) hemorrhages & colonic hemorrhages can be accurately determined endoscopically. However, these cases are often difficult to assess, either clinically or endoscopically in relation to lower GI hemorrhages, especially in the small intestine. Emergent embolization, a nonsurgical and therefore less invasive procedure, has been introduced to control GI hemorrhages. It can be performed concomitantly with diagnostic angiography, and in emergent situations it may be safer than immediate surgery for patients with massive hemorrhages. Our experiences with emergent embolization for the treatment of massive GI arterial hemorrhages are reported on. |
