[ Summary ] |
The past, present and future of interventional radiology (IVR) for insufficient vascular access (VA) in hemodialysis are described. The main IVR techniques to prevent insufficient VA (VA-IVR) are percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, pharmacomechanical thrombolysis and stent placement. All of these techniques were invented by Charles T Dotter, known as the father of vascular IVR. The presumed number of VA-IVR cases per year in Japan is 41,000. In the near future, VA-IVR may be an alternative to surgical treatment through the development of new techniques and improvements in instruments. |
