| [ Summary ] |
Surgery for malignant tumors in the digestive organs has widely been performed safely even in patients who are receiving maintenance dialysis. However, it is thought that dialysis patients are still in a high risk group because of increases in the number of elderly patients, as well as diabetic patients, and the long duration of dialysis therapy. Although overall mortality rates were high, the survival rates in dialysis patients with stomach and colon cancer were comparable with the general population, when other causes of death (e. g. cardiovascular disease), except for death due to cancer, were excluded. In this study, the majority of the causes of death after surgery for stomach and colon cancer were not related to the cancer. High morbidity and mortality rates in dialysis patients were responsible for the increased incidence of complications and deaths after surgery. Better outcomes after surgical treatment for dialysis patients with cancer rely on meticulous and intensive perioperative care, in addition to positive surveillance and early diagnosis. |
