[ Summary ] |
The prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections is high in patients who are receiving chronic hemodialysis. Development of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a serious complicatin of HBV and HCV infection. The incidence of HCC in patients with HCV chronic hepatitis increases with the degree of liver fibrosis as well as in HBV carriers. It is reported that the most important risk factor for hepatocarcinogenesis in chronic HCV hepatitis is progression to liver cirrhosis. Intensive and systematic infection control is needed to prevent outbreaks of HBV and HCV in hemodialysis units. |
