In monitoring the nutritional status of patients with renal failure, it is necessary to consider increased nutritional requirements due to uremic symptoms and hypermetabolism caused by accumulated waste products from protein metabolism. The nutritional status of patients depends primarily on the pathologic stage of renal failure. It is difficult to determine a specific clinical pathway for patients with renal failure because many patients pass through the nephrology unit. In our hospital, the nutrition support team (NST) is in charge of patients with predialysis renal failure. The NST not only follows up on patients with clinical pathway variance data, but also determines the basis of the clinical pathway itself. The NST can improve the treatment of patients with chronic diseases, including renal failure, who are not treated with a clinical pathway. |
