[ Summary ] |
Residual renal function (RRF) contributes to the adequacy of dialysis, quality of life and decreases in mortality for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. It is important to maintain RRF after the initiation of dialysis treatment. Several studies have demonstrated that there is improved preservation of RRF in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients as compared to hemodialysis patients. There is also a survival advantage for PD patients in the early stages of dialysis treatment. Thus, it is reasonable to consider PD as an initial treatment option when patients still have RRF in end-stage renal disease care. Further studies will be needed to clarify whether this concept is acceptable. |
