[ Summary ] |
Icodextrin is a mixture of high molecular weight, water-soluble glucose polymers, isolated by fractionationated hydrolyzed cornstarch. A seven point five percent icodextrin peritoneal solution is isotonic, and has better ultrafiltration rates compared with dextrose-based solutions during long dwells and in patients with high peritoneal transport. Other advantages of icodextrin-based solutions are improved biocompatibility and more favorable influence on glucose and lipid metabolism. Increases in plasma levels of icodextrin and its metabolites were recognized in patients using icodextrin-based solutions. Slightly decreased serum sodium concentrations, falsely low amylase activity assays and falsely high glucose assays were seen, as well as rare occurrences of non-bacterial peritonitis and skin rashes. |
