Post-transplant hypertension, hyper lipidemia, obesity and diabetes mellitus have been reported to negatively influence the risks of ischemic heart disease, grafts and patient survival. Therefore, nutritional management for kidney transplant recipients is recognized as an important approach in achieving long-term grafts and patient survival. Actual nutrient recommendations in kidney transplant recipients consist of salt restrictions, protein restrictions, adequate calorie intake and weight control, although the precise nutrient requirements for recipients continues to be incompletely defined. Physicians and their teams may have to encourage and convince recipients by explaining why they need diet and weight control, based on evidence concerning their effects on the grafts and patient survival. We should remember to avoid malnutrition and maintain high level of quality of life by using adequate diet control. |
