| [ Summary ] | The basic knowledge and techniques that an expert nurse should provide in the management and care of patients with renal failure are reviewed. Those requirements are not only limited to dialysis techniques but are also integrated with a wide variety of management tools for ESRD patients, including those in the pre-dialysis stage, the initiation-stage of renal replacement therapy, maintenance dialysis, as well as for hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and transplantation. Generally the responsibility of nurses is limited to carrying out orders from nephrologists and sometimes transmitting patient complaints. A true expert nurse specializing in renal failure-management should have the capability to discover unusual patients events promptly, to think, to judge, to make recommendations to patients, to make suggestions to other staff members and to respond promptly to consultations with patients. Concrete items to provide nurses who have expertise in renal failure-management are described. |
