| [ Summary ] |
Significant advances have occurred in the availability and application of different modalities and new drugs for the treatment of acute renal failure in the intensive care unit setting. The choice of renal replacement modality depends on the clinical status of the patient as well as the technical capabilities and experience of one's own institution. CRRT techniques are rapidly emerging for management of the critically ill patient with ARF and the nature of CRRT provides greater opportunities for manipulations by inexperienced personnel. Although accidents can be prevented by standardization of protocols for use of these therapies and by restricting the use to trained personnel, we should be more familiar with the techniques and be aware of complications associated with these therapies. |
