[ Summary ] Patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) are at increased risk of developing various neoplasms in the female genital tract. The most well known gynecological disease associated with PJS is adenoma malignum (AM) of the uterine cervix. This is defined as an unusually well differentiated adenocarcinoma with glandular cell morphology very close to that of normal cells, and so may be difficult to diagnose histologically. AM often has an unfavorable prognosis, because of the difficulties with initial diagnosis and treatment.
Recently, immunohistochemical examination revealed that antibodies designed as HIK1083 are reported to produce positive results for AM. This monoclonal antibody specifically recognizes an epitope present in a neutral mucin derived from the surface of gastric gland mucosal cells. For a definitive diagnosis of this disease, we should do appropriate and specific examinations employing staining to not miss this condition, and should make efforts to prevent its progression.
