[ Summary ] The main criteria for assessing conscious sedation continue to be patient satisfaction and comfort. The combination of benzodiazepine and narcotics should be used in sedation for endoscopic examinations. One form of benzodiazepine, diazepam, midazolam, or flunitrazepam are recommended, and the narcotic pethizine is also recommended. These drugs have antagonists (flumazenil or naloxone). During the examination, especially at the time of insertion of the endoscope, oxygen saturation is decreased. The endoscopists should pay close attention to respiration during the procedure and administer antagonists at the end of the procedure.
