[ Summary ] In the present report, we summarize the overview for methods of molecular screening and diagnostic tools for ulcerative colitis with neoplastic lesions. DNA chip technology is one of the most promising methods, prompting us to perform large scale gene expression profiling studies. Trancriptomics (e.g. oligonucleotides chip, cDNA spotted array) with genomics (e.g. array-based comparative genomic hybridization, single nucleotide polymorphism) and / or proteomics (e.g. matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry) based on the results of the human genome project, may lead us to obtain further insights into the molecular mechanisms of the dysplasia-carcinoma sequence in inflammatory bowel diseases. Such systematic and comprehensive molecular approaches combined with clinical and pathological evidence may play a large role in clinically useful diagnosis and screening for ulcerative colitis with neoplastic lesions.
