[ Summary ] |
An increased risk of developing colorectal cancer has been reported in pateients with long standing ulcerative colitis and cancer surveillance is recommended. Because it is difficult to detect dysplasia occuring in the flat mucosa, current practice guidelines recommend surveillance programs using random biopsy specimens. Recently, advances in high resolution endoscopy and chromoendoscopy have improved the diagnosis of flat dysplastic lesions. We emphasize that careful examinations, using chromoscopy and targeted biopsies of suspicious lesions is a more effective surveillance strategy than taking random biopsies. |
