| [ Summary ] |
The aim of this study is to estimate the sensitivity of combined flexible sigmoidoscopy and double-contrast barium enema (SS+BE) in the diagnosis of colorectal cancer. From 1990 to 1994, a total of 427 colorectal cancers were detected through the mass screening program with SS+BE in our institute. When colorectal cancer was discovered among the negative cases within one year after the initial examination, it was defined as false negative. We had 48 false negative cases including 11 invasive cancers beyond the submucosal layer. The sensitivity of SS+BE to whole colorectal cancer was 89.9%. However, it was lower in the proximal colon (73.1%) than the rectum and sigmoid colon (95.5%). These results suggest that SS+BE may still be weak in the detection of proximal colon cancer. |
