| [ Summary ] | Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. Early detection of recurrence after curative resection for primary colorectal cancer should improve patients' prognoses. However, the usefulness of postoperative surveillance programs has not yet been clarified. Some authors have postulated that intensive follow ups after curative resection for colorectal cancer would lead to early detection of recurrent disease or metachronous tumors, or both, and thus improve survival rates, while others have questioned the need for follow ups at all. There is currently a wide variation in follow ups. Among the many different protocols, the costs of health services are considerable and need to be justified with evidence. This review consists of several recommendations for surveillance of people after curative resection for colorectal cancer and a plan for surveillance in the National Cancer Center East. |
