[ Summary ] Technical targets for improving colonoscopic insertion are described in terms of endoscopic developments. Items to be improved on are reduced pain for the patient, good maneuverability of the scope shaft, good visibility inside the intestine and reduced fatigue for the endoscopist.
The first technical target is to develop a shaft for the scope which meets the requirements of stiffness, elasticity and torque transmittance. The shaft is made of different layered materials. Many improvements may be achieved by selecting appropriate materials and combining them in layers in an appro priate fashon. The second technical target is to develop optics which produce good visibility. The third technical target is to develop a handle which manipulates the tip of the scope smoothly. There have been several improvements, such as reduced torque force on the knobs, reduced weight and a slimmer grip. Further more, the durability of the shaft and complete sterilization are important items to be improved on.
Due to a great deal of research and development, we have developed colonoscopes which have high maneuverability, improved durability and light handles.
