[ Summary ] |
Twenty one patients underwent hepatic and pulmonary resection of liver and lung metastases from colorectal cancer in our institute during the period from March 1987 to December 2001. There were one synchronous group (n=5; Group B) and two meta chronous groups, including one in which liver metastasis was detected prior to lung metastasis (n=12; Group A) and the other one in which liver metastasis was detected after lung metastasis (n=4; Group C). No surgical mortality occurred in these patients. The five year survival rate was 50% in Group A and 42% in Group B, and the three year survival rate was 40% in Group C. These results indicated that both liver and lung resection for colorectal cancer metastases were surgically feasible and suggest that this may become an effective treatment if liver metastasis is detected before lung metastasis or synchronously. |
