[ Summary ] |
The concept of carcinoid tumor was reviewed according to the literature with special reference to a historical account of benignancy and malignancy. In addition, pathological characteristics of rectal carcinoid tumors, indices of malignancy and a standard in terms of evaluating the curability of endoscopic resection were discussed on clinicopathological analyses of an experienced 148 lesions in 137 cases (five of whom had metastasis) with reference to the literature. As a result, important indices of malignancy were tumor size, depth of invasion, irregular surface of ulceration, mitosis and vascular permeation. It was also concluded that principally the same standard for evaluating the curability of endoscopic resection used for early colonic cancer can be applied to carcinoid tumors. |
