Recently, magnifying colonoscopy has received attention as a clinically useful diagnostic tool for treating colorectal tumors. However, there have been no studies done regarding whether or not a magnifying scope provides better ability to perform of pathological diagnosis of the tumor than an ordinary scope. We evaluated the relationship between real-time diagnosis of pit patterns and pathological diagnosis, and then validated the usefulness of the magnifying colonoscope by retrospectively comparing the accuracy of its prediction of pathological diagnosis to that of an ordinary scope. In our study, the pit patterns, which were diagnosed by using a magnifying scope, were correlated with pathological diagnoses. Prediction rates for pathological diagnosis of adenoma are significantly higher when using a magnifying scope than an ordinary scope. A magnifying colonoscopy was found to be superior to an ordinary colonoscopy in predicting the pathological diagnosis of colorectal neoplasms during endoscopic procedures. |
