In order to learn the colonoscope insertion technique, there are a few considerable processes, such as the use of a colon model, emulation of experienced endoscopists, and beginning from cases easy to achieve total colonoscopy. With respect to the colon model, the most advanced models have certain functions that can accurately simulate the actual procedure (e.g., position change of the examinee and abdominal compression). Furthermore, emulating the experienced endoscopists would be helpful in learning not only the insertion techniques but also therapeutic skills. More importantly, beginners should not perform total colonoscopy in difficult cases. Such cases must be transferred to experienced endoscopists to prevent patient discomfort during colonoscopic examination. We recently attempted to visualize the intubation technique through joint research with an industrial company to provide more effective education. Technical differences between the beginners and experienced endoscopists are expected to be revealed by this research in the near future, which could contribute to improving the learning curve for the insertion technique. |
