[ Summary ] |
The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is an effective tool for colon cancer screening to select highrisk patients who need to undergo colonoscopy. However, approximately 20 % of colorectal cancers detected in patients who underwent screening showed negative FIT results. Direct screening colonoscopy is expected to identify such interval cancers missed by FIT; however, it may be less effective in screening low-risk patients. The Asia-Pacific Colorectal Screening scoring system was developed by The Asia-Pacific Working Group on Colorectal Cancer to identify individuals at a high risk for advanced neoplasms. This scoring system effectively identifi es high-risk patients with FIT-negative colon cancer to ensure timely colonoscopy in this selected population. Combination of FIT and colonoscopy is a useful screening tool (based on risk stratifi cation of patients) for more effective prevention of colorectal cancer deaths. |
