| [ Summary ] |
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a hereditary autoinflammatory disease characterised by repeated peritonitis and fever. Generally, since the primary mechanism of FMF is peritonitis, gastrointestinal mucosal involvement is considered to be a rare condition in FMF patients. Some recent reports have indicated that FMF patients have intestinal lesions mimicking inflammatory bowel disease. However, the reports of small intestinal lesions related to FMF are a few. This review focuses on small intestinal lesions in patients with FMF and discusses endoscopic features. Several reports have suggested that erosions, ulcers, and edema are primarily observed in the small intestine of FMF patients. Interestingly, one report showed petal-shaped mucosal redness with white borders is as a characteristic. Further study of cases of small intestinal lesions in FMF patients is required for elucidation of clinical characteristics. |
