| [ Summary ] |
Cryptogenic multifocal ulcerous stenosing enteritis (CMUSE) is an extremely rare disorder characterized by multiple small intestinal stenoses and ulcers. The lesions resemble NSAID-induced membranous stenoses, causing chronic or relapsing obstructive symptoms. Although systemic corticosteroid therapy seems to be effective, steroiddependency and postsurgical recurrence are major issues. Recently, the relation between prostaglandin metabolism and pathogenesis of CMUSE has been investigated. No cases associated with CMUSE have been reported in Japan. However, it appears that some patients with CMUSE exist in East Asia. Thus, this rare disease is a notable disease and should be considered when small intestinal stenoses and ulcers are observed. |
