[ Summary ] |
The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing globally, including in Japan. IBD in the elderly is becoming more common. Genetic backgrounds are involved less with the pathophysiology of later onset of IBD. Response to drug therapies appears to be similar in elderly patients as in younger ones. Corticosteroid treatment carries additional risks for elderly patients. In addition, polypharmacological effects and malignancies should be taken into account. Pre-existing comorbidities and nutrition are important factors concerning surgical outcomes. |
