Practice guidelines are defined as statements that include recommendations intended to optimize patient care that are informed by a systematic review of evidence and an assessment of the benefits and harms of alternative care options. Guidelines differ from directives or commands and are developed to support health care providers and patients. The current practice guidelines for ulcerative colitis in Japan were published in 2006 and need to be revised. The GRADE system has gained popularity as the method of guideline development. Strict appraisal of the evidence and synthesis of the evidence through systematic review are required, and recommendations of clinical indices are not always parallel to evidence in the GRADE system. Revised practice guidelines for inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, will be released soon. |
