The pathological significance of depression in superficial colorectal cancer was studied by using a two dimensional morphometrical method in 174 lesions of colorectal intramucosal cancer and adenoma and 25 lesions of submucosal invasive NPG type cancers. Superficial colorectal cancers were classified into two groups based on their cross-sectional appearance, superficial elevated type (45 lesions) and superficial depressed type (64 lesions). The mean tumor size of superficial depressed cancer was smaller than that of superficial elevated cancer. The ratio of transmural growth and frequency of cancer were high in superficial depressed cancer as compared to those in superficial elevated cancer. No difference was noted in the ratio of transmural growth, frequency of cancer and mean size of cancer between relatively depressed cancer and absolutely depressed cancer. A similar result for submucosal invasive NPG type cancer was also obtained. When considering the difference in the character of superficial type cancers between the depressed and elevated types, superficial intramucosal cancer should be classified into depressed type and elevated type. |
