[ Summary ] |
Long-term courses of ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn's disease (CD) are associated with increased risk of cancer or dysplasia due to inflamed mucosa. Besides disease duration, other reported risk factors for cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) include lesion extent, chronic refractory disease course, and family history of colorectal cancer (CRC). In patients with UC, the presence of inflammatory polyposis and strictures during colonoscopic examination has been linked to increased risk of carcinogenesis. In this chapter, we discuss carcinogenesis risk factors in patients with IBD based on an analysis of our experiences and the results of domestic and international studies, with a primary focus on UC. |
