| [ Summary ] |
Endoscopic findings in the small intestine and colon have revealed considerable differences between amyloid type AA and AL proteins. In cases involving AA amyloidosis, a mucosal pattern with numerous fine granular elevations is evident. This correlates with expansion of amyloid deposits in the lamina propria. Patients with AL amyloidosis, exhibit polypoid protrusions and thickening of the folds, reflecting massive amyloid deposits in the muscularis mucosa, submucosa and muscularis propria. Recently, ulceration and submucosal hematoma of the intestine have been reported in patients with AL amyloidosis. |
