[ Summary ] |
Pathogenic Escherichia coli, which causes diarrhea, is classified into five groups. Because enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infection may lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, it should be diagnosed as early as possible. In patients in the acute phase of EHEC-induced colitis, colonoscopy reveals characteristic inflammation in the right-side of the colon. To diagnose EHEC-induced colitis, not only colonoscopic findings but also bacterial fecal cultures and biopsy specimens are important. Neither clinical features nor colonoscopic finding of enteropathogenic Eschericia coli (EPEC)- induced colitis are distinct from those of ischemic colitis. |
