[ Summary ] |
Infectious complications are significant causative factors for morbidity and mortality in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Risk of infection may be related to the disease process itself, related complications and/or the use of immunosuppressive medications. Numerous studies have described an association of enteric infections such as Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) with IBD relapse. Thus, clinicians caring for patients with IBD who experience unexplained deterioration as well as refractory flares should consider a coexisting C. difficile or CMV infection. |
