[ Summary ] |
Antibiotic associated hemorrhagic colitis (AAHC) is characterized by endoscopic findings and the sudden onset of bloody diarrhea during antibiotic therapy. Bloody diarrhea and severe abdominal pain are frequent symptoms of AAHC. 80% of AAHC patients have taken some form of penicillin or its derivatives. Endoscopic AAHC findings include segmental distribution of mucosal hemorrhaging and edema, which is localized and predominantly in the right colon. The cause of AHCC is unknown. Several mechanisms related to this condition have been suggested, including allergic reactions and infection with Klebsiella oxytoca. Klebsiella oxytoca has recently been shown to be the causative agent for AAHC. |
