| [ Summary ] |
The FICE (Fuji Intelligent Color Enhancement) system was developed in 2005 as an alternative selection system for Narrow Band Imaging (NBI). Without the use of dyes or modification of the light source, the FICE system enhances the contrast of mucosal surfaces, particularly capillary networks on the mucosal surface of the colorectum. Pit pattern images can also be enhanced with the FICE system. In a pilot study, pit pattern images from the FICE system were compared favorably to these produced by chromoscopy using indigo carmine dye, but not with those produced by chromoscopy using crystal violet. That is because chromoscopy using crystal violet facilitates direct observation of the pits themselves. On the other hand FICE may make it possible to observe pit-like components surrounded by dark-stained vessels. Therefore, the FICE system would play a minor role in pit pattern diagnosis, especially in the field of differentiating substantially invasive T1 colorectal cancer from minutely invasive varieties. However, FICE as well as NBI may gain popularity as the standards for endoscopy, because FICE images can be instantaneously obtained by pushing a button on the endoscope. |
