| [ Summary ] | Gross appearance can be divided into three types : protruded type, superficial type, and depressed type. Each of the three types has its different characteristics. The depressed types is more malignant than those of the protruded type. The protruded type exhibits lower rate of submucosal invasion than any other type of early colorectal cancer, whereas the depressed type has the highest rate. Laterally spreading tumors (LST) tend to extend superficiality and circumferential. The historical classification of gross appearance made by the Japanese society is dependent only on the shape of lesion, but does not always reflect its biological nature. Our macroscopic and evolutionary classification is superior in the light of prediction of the lesion's biological behavior and for deciding the treatment selection. |
