[ Summary ] |
Pathological diagnosis of mesenchymal neoplasms of the colon and rectum has mostly been reviewed in regard to gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). At the 2001 NIH Consensus Meeting, the agreed-on-histological diagnostic criteria for GIST and malignancy diagnosis were discussed. More concretely, diagnosis must be based on histological staining using hematoxylin and eosin, along with immunohistochemical staining for CD 117 and CD 34. If immunohistochemical staining is negative, genetic diagnosis is needed. When assessing the malignancy of GIST, maximum lesion diameter and mitotic count are important. Histological findings of smooth muscle, neurogenic and vascular tumors were mostly described. |
