[ Summary ] The development of new technology in gastrointestinal endoscopy give us a lot of benefits in every aspects. In terms of the magnifying endoscopy, when we use the colonic pit pattern, we highly came to estimate the histology of the lesion without taking biopsies from it.
It has been known that there were some subtle differences among the institutions where the pit pattern were used, so we started the discussion to decide the definition of the pit pattern, especially in type V pit pattern, in the Kudo's group since 2002.
The subdivision of the type V pit pattern were consolidated at the Hakone pit pattern symposium, in April, 2004. It was determined that the VN pit pattern exhibited only the area of no structure. According to the further discussion about the VI pit pattern among the several institution, we defined the VI type with destroyed and desert pits as a high grade irregularity.
With the classification based on the Hakone consensus, the lesion, which exhibited new type VN pit pattern was considered to be SM massive cancers. The highly irregular I pit pattern also became one of the indexes of SM massive cancers.
Nowadays, there are some issues in that the notion of each term in VI type pit pattern were different even between several institutions.
To share the notion in respect of the terminology, we have to work out the mutual interpretation about this matter through the discussion.
