| [ Summary ] |
The focus of this examination was on the clinical usefulness of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for the diagnosis of high grade dysplasia and colitic cancer in patients with ulcerative colitis. Two high grade dysplasia lesions and nine colitic cancers were examined with conventional colonoscopy and EUS. The colitic cancers consisted of seven mucosal cancer lesions, one lesion determined to be submucosally invasive cancer and one muscularis propria invasive cancerous lesion. The depth of tumor invasion was correctly diagnosed in all lesions with EUS. Most lesions were observed to be ; isoechoic or hypoechoic masses by employing EUS. It was concluded that EUS is useful in diagnosing the depth of invasion of colitic cancer and selecting correct surgical techniques. However, further studies are necessary to evaluate the role of BUS in the diagnosis of dysplasia and colitic cancer in ulcerative colitis patients. |
