[ Summary ] Laterally spreading tumors (LST) have been classified as those lesions larger than 10 mm in diameter and extending circumferentially rather than vertically. They are classified into two subtypes : granular (LST-G) and non granular (LST-NG). However, they are not clearly defined at present.
We analyzed the molecular biological features of LSTs compared to other macroscopic types of colorectal tumors (protruded type I, superficial elevated type IIa and IIa + IIc, depressed type IIc and IIa).
These results suggest that LSTs should be classified as an independent disease entity. In our study, LST-Gs are similar to the protruded type of tumor and some aspects of LST-NGs are similar to depressed type tumors. However, other aspects of LST-NGs are similar to those of the protruding type tumor.
