[ Summary ] There were 52,364 colonoscopies performed between 1986 and 2003. One point nine percent of these cases involved emergencies. The chief post-procedure complaint was bleeding 773 (78.1 %). The number two complaint was diarrhea 48 (4.8 %). The most common disease associated with colonoscopies was infectious colitis (18). The next most common conditions were pseudomembranous colitis and ulcerative colitis, with five cases each. There were 28 (2.8 %) procedures performed for abdominal pain, caused by colon cancer (5) and ischemic colitis (5). Twelve emergency procedures were done to insert a transanal decompression tube, to relieve colorectal obstructions. Six cases each involved reduction of the volvulus of the sigmoid colon. Three cases involved endoscopic removal of foreign bodies. We must make careful decisions on changes in emergency colonoscopic procedures because there is a danger.
