In Japan, approximately 50,000 people die from colorectal cancer annually. Effective use of CT colonography might lead to decreasing this mortality rate. High diagnostic accuracy can be obtained using the standard tagging method (labeling with an oral contrast agent) in CT colonography. The high diagnostic accuracy of this technique has been proven by various large-scale studies conducted in some countries around the world, including Japan. It is important to note that the accuracy of CT colonography is lower than that of colonoscopy in diagnosing flat lesions. However, CT colonography is superior in efficiency to colonoscopy in some areas, such as in the proximal sides of folds and the hepatic flexure. In Japan, it has been reported that colorectal cancer can be consistently detected in institutions performing CT colonography for screening or detailed examinations. |
