[ Summary ] |
Gastrointestinal submucosal tumors (SMTs) are often incidentally detected during gastrointestinal endoscopy. SMTs are difficult to diagnose using conventional endoscopic images and forceps biopsies, because SMTs are covered with normal epithelium. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is used for safe and accurate histological examination of SMTs. The indication of EUS-FNA for SMT is the presence of a hypoechoic solid tumor larger than 10 mm, which cannot be diagnosed conclusively by imaging alone. |
